Stephen Shen of STS guide service says: The end of the annual salmon run is coming to an end in the upper salmon river. Anglers report a few brown trout hook ups with steelhead hook ups possibly coming on stronger, and still a coho here and there. All the trib flows will be on the rise and melting and probably going off color. Welcome to November and better brown trout chances! When flows are reduced, guys are seeing a handful of browns and a few more steelhead nearer the dam. To the east, like at Sandy Creek, the higher Canal bolstered flows have made for better migration conditions with pods of salmon bolting from the estuary holding water and spreading upstream, along with a few browns mixed in.. Spin Doctor, Chrome, Crush UV, 2 face with an Atomic purple mirage behind it. The Oak Orchard Harbor is in the process of being dredged which started last week (8/25) and is expected to finished mid September. First week of Sep 2019 with lots more chances ahead. There could be fresh steelhead, fresh silver browns or drop back fish. Hike some different water spots on the smaller tribs and you should find some brown trout action with a steelhead or two thrown in. Still no real cool down afoot and the forecast ahead thru the weekend and maybe some of next week looks warm. There is some icing up in spots but theres still drifting slots to be found. Anchor where the current isnt strong and cast out shrimp. Anglers started out with a tough bite yesterday but reported better later in the day. Colder temps could bring back some icing conditions esp in the smaller waterways if lower flows prevail. With no real winter to come out of and trib and open lake water temps all on the warmer side, who knows for sure how the steelhead gods will play things out over the next couple months?! A good WNW wind thru last night probably moved more fish near shore or into the tribs from Lake Ontario but dont look for those fish to loiter in estuary or rivermouth spots at this point in the season. Seems like the Kings just arent concentrated in any particular fast water spot in any trib and thats the tougher reports I hear from guys. Temperatures have finally started dropping with cooler weather setting in. Thru yesterday guys were into good steelhead action on some fresh fish on the highest flows while water color was not too bad. By steelhead standards the flows we have now are real nice and could move some fresh fish upstream. Hard copies can be requested by emailing FWFish@dec.ny.gov. The full moon that was maybe responsible for the uptick in migrations just recently is now on the wane. The weather she is a changing again as has been the case for most of this trib season. Slightly lower flows will likely reveal more browns then thought when the water was higher. The area received a few inches of wet snow and sleet thru the end of the past week. Some decent brown trout action now for most anglers on the Oak seemingly on the backside of these most recent higher flows. As the cooler weather continues, expect to see a large influx of both steelhead and brown trout moving up stream to feed on the remaining salmon eggs. Oak rivermouth dredging operations are likely days away from finishing. Its unclear if these lower flows will hang on, more then likely with temps rebounding thru this mid week that flows will rebound some with a little more stain. The new lodge is convenient to eastern tribs like Sandy Creek. The 2nd will be a 2 day event September 4th and 5th. Capt. If any Canal winter time drainage is passing thru it must be tempered like Canal managers said they would do. And, a big shout-out and congratulations to Crazy Yankee for winning this past weekends 2021 Niagara Pro Am! Small boat trollers and casters both in on the action with glow hardware and/or plugs. Minutes later the 150 A-TOM-MIK copper took a ride. Chance of even warmer unseasonable temps for next week. Fishing pressure is light with a few cars seen at each parking spot on the Oak. Fishing has been a challenge. Chance of an inch or so of area wide snow tonight on the Lake Ontario plain with 2-3 inches expected to the south. The best way to target these fish is to concentrate on the shoots coming off the dam. The Orleans County Open (formerly known as the Oak Orchard Open) is a combined Salmon and Trout team event to showcase Lake Ontarios tournament teams and recreational anglers. The other area smaller tribs look mostly open again with mod to med flows and slightly stained water color. Theres some brisk NE lakeshore winds that will make for some rough seas and cool and probably dirty water color. Another warmup is forecast thru the mid week with highs in the 40sF and another chance at rain Thursday. Flows in the other tribs bracketing east and west look like they are back up some. To the west, theres not a lot of recent reports but flows should be more like moderate to medium and going toward clear. The other area smaller waterways are about mod with water color of about 2+ ft of viz. Also to note is the Ridge Road/Route 104 bridge over the Oak Orchard Creek in the town of Ridgeway is now open to travelers. Looks like, just today, guys are paying more attention to the gravel spawning spots so they are finding those spread-out fish that were somewhat cloaked in the previous higher water. Aiden also won the Youth Division with that salmon. There was another couple inches of wet snow and something like a 0.25 inch of rain thru last night. Mixed bag chances for lakers, browns, steelhead in the River or on the Niagara bar rivermouth. Still light fishing pressure yet the regulars who are getting out there are getting their hookups like nearer the dam. Look for a good water flow window possibly in the Genny while the Niagara remains a tough pill thanks to a windy open Lake Erie. On the Oak its been exceptionally weedy and duckweedy but some of that material is moving out now. A couple days of warm temps and some rain yesterday has the trib flows up and rolling again! Classic drifting, not so much. Mexico Bay has seen an invasion of salmon. Flows in the Oak are clearing slowly and hanging in somewhere between medium and slightly high. Could be guys were finding easier fishing flows on the smaller waterways. A few pools or slots may hide a fish that didnt take the drop back trip. The Oak benefits from 24/7 spring, summer and fall supplemental flows from the Erie Canal. The first will be a 1 day event July 10th. Not much precipitation was realized for the past weekend, so all the trib flows are on the drop and clearing for now. Theres a chance for more significant accumulations which could bring area totals to 2 3 ft of snow. All the trib flows look on the retreat from previous snowmelt and precipitation. She bought him the trip to repay him for taking her fishing when she was young. Flows in the Oak look slightly high consisting of all turbine water with maybe 6 inches of viz. Flies and egg imaginations have been the best baits for the salmon. There are miles of water for fish to be dropping back from compared to about only a short mile of Oak water. Take advantage of any reasonable drift chances for the late winter and spring period since waiting for low and clear means youll prob miss some opportunities. Fishing pressure is light with most guys reporting a few steelhead and/or browns. Blown flows typically come from the overflow channel. Flows - Oak Orchard Fishing Report. Still on the cool and breezy side today with another brief warm-up forecast over the next couple days. From a small boat, drifting treated egg skein is a good approach to try, fished under a float. One warm water 40-50F hook-up is worth a half dozen 32 point something F hook ups! Proceeding upstream thru the Oak downstream frog water areas the reports are quieter but I suspect guys are into a decent skein bite. Certain days youll notice that salmon movement by seeing them crashing around, but as often as not that movement seems to go on quietly. This weekend there is a scheduled white-water release, that plus the cooler temperatures should attract a better push. With the mid week warm up look for flows to be on the rise and opening up some and going off color about thru the mid/end of week. With these colder temps the fish are reasonably hardy, they wont be later on. For now on the Oak, anglers seem to be hooking up on a few steelhead nearest the dam that came along with the higher flows of a few weeks ago mixed in with a handful of fresh fish trickling in thru the downstream fast water. A great time was had by all and theyre looking forward to returning next year! The river is still very dangerous to wade at 10k+, so be careful! First, take advantage of mature king, coho salmon and brown trouts urge to seek the river waters around the piers at the Point Breeze pier, channel, and bay casting with brightly colored spoons is the ticket, especially predawn and at sunset. Waiting for supposed better conditions could mean missing out and finding even worse water conditions later on. Water flows and trout and salmon migrations are looking good thanks to bolstered Erie Canal feed to the Oak and other waterways. Chance of some Lake Effect Snow this weekend with any accumulations expected south of here off Lake Erie. Temps are forecast in the lower 30sF for highs and dropping back into the 20s at night with some colder temps in the upcoming forecast. The medium to slightly high flows in the Oak are proving to be a nice draw for Kings. Coldish days in the low 30s F and 20s at night look to be dropping trib flows to the east at Sandy quicker then flows to the west at Johnson. Other area smaller tribs have med flows and slightly stained water color something like 1 2 feet of visibility. These numbers represent just some of the total number of salmonids (brown trout too!) For best chances at steelhead action later this winter and spring we might hope for some more colder and typical winter weather for the in between later Dec/early Jan timeframe. Today seems slower again for some. Port Bay still has perch fishing along the north end of the bay. The charter fleet has had king salmon action in 100-120 FOW using chrome glow flasher fly combinations down to 60 ft. It may just not be the big blowout event were targeting, but smaller spates of water for now. The forecast ahead for end of week and Christmas weekend looks challenging. We dropped our port rigger down and within 5 minutes we hooked up on a 18 lb king. Upstream action so far mainly for a few fish at the dam. You can see the Canal drainage influence in the stained color but Canal release flows sure look more tempered in the smaller tribs then say the Oak. Expect water level fluctuations thanks to hydro power operations and whats been a delayed leaf fall. The Greater Niagara Fish Odyssey is slowly catching on with the new Fishing Chaos app and there are 7 different fish species categories up for grabs in both the adult and the youth divisions. Any below freezing night could make for some skim ice or chunky flows in an exposed waterway like Sandy. First real cold night of the year Sunday night probably tightened things up for flows and runoff in the Oak and smaller area tribs as well. Capt. Many still in good green shape with some old moldies now on Halloween zombie patrol downstream. A nice spate of water which is hanging on in the Oak and retreating in the other area smaller tribs back to the base Canal feed. Flow conditions right now are more like nice steelhead water and higher then typical fall flows.
